    Red Ironbark timber

Ironbark timber (Eucalyptus tricarpa) is a medium to large tree occurring in north central Victoria. Heartwood is dark red. Sapwood pale yellow, to 25mm wide. Texture is medium and even.

The grain is interlocked. Often producing an attractive fiddleback figure. Green density is about 1220 Kg/m3. Air dried density about 1130 Kg/m3. Due to the density and interlocked grain of Ironbark it sands and polishes to a superb finish.

Slow to dry. Care is needed to minimise surface checking. Shrinkage about 3.5% radial and 7% tangential. Because of the interlocked grain it is necessary to adjust the cutting angle when dressing it. Heartwood is very durable.

Ironbark timber is often found with yellow gum on less fertile soils. It is sometimes found in association with grey box on more fertile soils. The bark is deeply fissured and very hard. Ironbark timber does not shed its bark and is slow growing. In drier areas of its distribution, the growth rate is up to 4mm per year. This creates a very hard, dense timber with very durable properties.
