Grey Box timber (Eucalyptus microcarpa) is a large hardwood of eastern Victoria and NSW. The heartwood is pale brown, sometimes with a tinge of pink. The sapwood is distinctively paler. Texture is relatively fine and even.

Grain usually interlocked, often producing an attractive fiddleback figure. Green Density is about 1180 kg m3. Air dried density is about 1100kg m3.

Due to the density of Grey box timber it sands and polishes to a superb finish. Slow to dry. Shrinkage is about 4% radial and 7% tangential.

It is sometimes found with red ironbark on less fertile soils. Grey box timber is sometimes found in association with yellow box on more fertile soils. The bark is non-fibrous.

Grey box timber rarely shed its bark and is slow growing. In drier areas of its distribution, the growth rate is up to 4mm per year. This creates a very hard, dense timber with very durable properties. A tree with a diameter of 60cm may be up to 150 years old. In early settlement periods, Grey box timber was often used as support props in gold mining areas of central Victoria.
