Sugar Gum timber (Eucalyptus cladocalyx) is a large tree found naturally in South Australia. The heartwood is pale yellow brown with fine uniform texture. It has an interlocked grain which often produces an attractive fiddleback figure. There are many plantations throughout Victoria.

Green density is about 1300 kg m3 and air dried density about 1150 kg m3. Due to the density of Sugar Gum it sands and polishes to a superb finish. Slow to dry but little degrade. Shrinkage is about 6% radial and 10.5% tangential.

Due to its close grain and density it sands and polishes to a superb finish. Sugar Gum timber is available in various grades with fiddleback figure. It creates a lot of dust when worked and is heavy to handle.

Sugar Gum timber has smooth bark and is slow growing. The slow growth rate creates a very hard, dense timber with very durable properties. It can be sanded to an excellent finish, with the natural colour coming through without staining.

Sugar Gum timber is available in limited amounts. Produces furniture with life-time value, which improves with age. Sugar Gum is easy to work with both hand and machine tools. Can be turned and polished or used in fine furniture projects. Examples of furniture include kitchen cabinets and cupboards.
