  • River Red Gum timber

Red Gum timber (Eucalyptus camaldulensis) is a medium to large hardwood tree. The heartwood is red to reddish brown. A close grain and very hard timber. Sapwood is 40mm wide and distinctly paler. Texture is fine and even. Grain usually interlocked often producing an attractive fiddleback figure.

Gum veins are common. Green density is about 1130kg m3. Air dried density about 900kg m3. Shrinkage is about 4% radial and 8% tangential. Because of the tightly interlocked grain it is necessary to adjust the cutting angle when dressing it.

Due to its close grain and density it sands and polishes to a superb finish. Red Gum timber is available in feature, standard, and select grades. All grades are also available with fiddleback figure. It creates a lot of dust when worked and is heavy to handle.

Red Gum timber has smooth bark and is slow growing. The growth rate is slow and this creates a very hard, dense timber with very durable properties. Red Gum timber was often used as railway sleepers, posts and stumps for houses and wharf timbers along the Murray River.

Red Gum timber is available in limited amounts. Produces furniture with life-time value, which improves with age. Red Gum is easy to work with both hand and machine tools. It takes stain easily and can be sanded to an excellent finish.
